What to do in a Dental Emergency

It is an unpleasant situation to be in but a dental emergency can arise at any time. Whilst it could be an indication that you are overdue for a routine check-up or follow-up treatment, it is more likely to be that something unforeseen has happened which has left you in pain or discomfort.

What kind of situations constitute a dental emergency?

  • Sudden pain in your toothdental emergency
  • Tooth being knocked out
  • Fracture or damage to a tooth
  • Sudden pain from braces or implants

If you experience one of these or a similar problem with your teeth it is important that you call your dentist as soon as possible for advice or an appointment should it be required.

Getting to a dentist early can make all the difference between saving and losing a tooth, not to mention relieving the considerable pain you are probably experiencing.

Our practice will usually see emergency patients on the same day or within 24 hours during normal working hours, even if you are not registered at this practice. We also provide an out of hours emergency service for our registered patients; the number for our emergency pager service can be found on our answer-phone message.

Is there anything you can do in the meantime?

Yes, there are steps you can take to minimise your pain and discomfort and also protect your teeth whilst waiting for your emergency appointment. These may include:

  • Using an ice pack or cold compress to reduce any swelling
  • Use paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve pain – do not use aspirin as this is an anticoagulant and may cause excessive bleeding
  • If a tooth is knocked out and it is not possible to keep it in the mouth, place in a clean cloth or gauze surrounded by saliva or milk until you can get to the dentist

Your dentist should be able to further advise you when you first call them, based on your individual circumstances and how long you will need to wait to receive treatment.

Wycombe Dental Centre offers an emergency dentist service to customers across High Wycombe and the surrounding areas. For more information please visit our website or call the practice on 01494 442922.
